Mr. Thrifty Principle #5: Be willing to negotiate and have your information ready

How do you get it? Get the names for several locators. Call one up and set an appointment to come into their office and meet with them. When you get there, tell them that you’re choosing between them and a competitor. Explain that you’ll work with them, but you want ½ of the commission as a rebate.

Most locators only deal with people renting $500-$600 apartment, so if you will be renting an $800, $900, or $1000 apartment, they are going to be very interested in making a deal on the rebate. If you’re spending more than average, be sure to tell the locator. Also, they don’t want to waste time with people who have bad credit, evictions, criminal histories, or lack proof of income, so be sure to tell them that you will have no trouble qualifying (if that’s true).
