Beware of Extras Rent Charges

Mr. Thrifty Principle #10: Beware of apartments that charge for ‘extras’

When you call an apartment, they may quote you a price for a 2 bedroom apartment, but when you actually see the 2 bedroom apartment you want, you find out they’ve added on a fee for the view, the new carpet, the ceiling fans, etc. Ask up front if they charge extra based on these “non rent” amenities. If so, beware… where there is one hidden fee, there are more.

Well written. Thank you for the tips. The other thing that I have found is that you should definatley try to bargain with apartment complex. I was able to get $75 a month off of my rent by just asking.
Apartment owners are evil

Ok, I know this is not a rant and rave site, but I H8te apartment managers. It seems that all they want to do is take advanatage of rents. :upset It is amazing at how often they are either asking for more rent money, charging a fee for something etc. When will it ever end? If you want thrifty rent you are going to have to out there and negotiate hard...
Where's the love?

Why do you "H8te" landlords? They are just in business like everyone else. Yes, there are some who are dishonest but that is just like in any other business. As far as charging you fees etc., was there a good reason why they were asking for the fees? Did you not clean the place when you moved out? Did your pet ruin the carpet? Were you 20 days late on your rent?

Sometimes fees are not all bad or undeserved.

If you are going to rent an apartment, play by the rules otherwise buy and trash your own house.
Hates a strong word...

but it does seem like when you rent an apartment there are a lot of sharks out there.
Just got cash back...

I live in Phoenix, AZ and was just able to get a cash refund from an apartment locator. I didn't know that this actually worked! Thank you for the rent tip!

Like the rent article says, be careful of the $100 off you first six months rent. Basically that is a way for the apartment complex to raise your rent after six months. I thought I could negotiate the lower rent longer but was wrong.
Great article

Great article on how to save money on rent. I did not realize things like asking for cash back and other tricks. Kudos for Mr. Thrifty.
Negotiate Negotiate Negotiate

Really the best way to truly save some serious money on your rent is to be willing to negotiate. If the landlord is not willing, move on to the next place. Being willing to ask for either lower rent or perks can result in huge savings.

For example, in the place I am living in now, I got $50 off the rent, 1 month free and a free storage unit. None of these things were originally offered to me.

Ask and negotiate!
