Mr. Thrifty Tip #6 on How to Save Money on Gas: Use Gas Rebate Credit Card

Mr. Thrifty has been a fan of the rebate credit cards for some time now.  If you credit is in good shape and you don’t carry a balance (if you are carrying a balance on your credit card stop reading this article and figure out how to pay it off!), they can be a great way to go.

Recently there have been a lot of cards which are so called “gas rebate credit cards” that give you anywhere between 1-5% back on your gas purchases.  Personally Mr. Thrifty uses Discover that gives him up to 5% back on his gas purchases.  There are, however, many other gas rebate credit cards- some reward you with cash back, some with gift certificates and others with more gas.  For an idea of what’s currently around and running, check out the gas rebate credit card ads that should be running to the left of this article.

Gas at over $3.00 gallon?

Wow. Gas prices are high! Right now, where I live, in NYC I am paying something like $3.50 a gallon. Saving money and cutting back are important. What about tip of combining all of your errands so you cut down on the number of trips?

Cheaper in Oklahoma but still expensive

Gas down here in Tulsa is a lot less that $3.50 a gallon. We are at something like $2.60 a gallon. That still is very expensive and make me want to find ways to save on gas. One gas saving trick tht I have heard about is using sythetic motor oil instead of regular motor oil. I heard that it is supposed to increase you gas mileage. Anyone else hear about that?

and accelerating/decelerating less. I've found since I've made the effort to coast more that our gas mileage has gone down.

I just spent $75 to fill up my SUV! I can't believe how high the prices are. Someone is making a bunch of money and it is not me...
Drop the SUV

How can you possible complain about a $75 gas bill if you are driving an SUV? I am not one of those Preius driving wacko's but come on... You knew that your gas bill was going to be high when you bought it... Today's high gas prices on compound the issue. Start with a smaller car if you want to save on gas costs

One thing that I do when traveling is trying to fill up at exits where there are multiple gas stations close to one another. There is something about when the free hand of competition occurs amoung several different gas stations. I have found the gas prices to be much lower that exits who have only one gas station.
Gas Credit Cards

I have used a gas rebate credit card for the last couple of months. It has not eased the high gas prices but at least it helps. There are a bunch of gas rebate cards out there, find the best one for you (mine has no annual fee).

I agree with the person above regarding a gas rebate credit card. I get something like 5% back with my Shell rebate credit card. Good deal.
