Mr. Thrifty Tip #2 on How to Save Money on Gas: Use Your Cruise Control

Cruise control on your car is kind of like wearing Chaco sandals- they both are comfortable and functional.  Chacos are great for running around on the beach or in the lake and they won’t fall off of your feet when you get in the water.

Cruise control is nice on a long trip as you can rest your feet/leg as well as it helps you save money on gas.  How?  Simple.  Most people when they drive long distances will gradually increase their speed the longer they drive.  Going faster definitely decreases your mileage.  Also, cruise control keeps you at a constant speed and helps reduce the up and down speed changes that can kill your gas mileage.

Research supports this claim.  Edmunds.com recently ran a test using a Land Rover (hardly the most fuel efficient car) and a Ford Mustang.  In their tests, when using cruise control they found they got between 4-14% better mileage using cruise control.  That can really add up to some big savings over time.
Total Savings: 10% better mileage.
