Summary

If you are confused by all of the terms and exceptions around things, you are not alone.  Mr. Thrifty finds all of this stuff confusing as well.  So, what do you do?  Are the rental car insurance policies a good deal or not?  There are two ways to answer this question.  First you can spend a bunch of time calling your insurance and credit card companies trying to verify coverage.  While this may be a fun use of time for Mrs. Anal-Retentive, the rest of us don’t want to go though all of this.

If you are lazy like Mr. Thrifty, then here is a general rule of thumb.  Ask yourself this general question: Do I have pretty comprehensive car and homeowners (or renters) insurance?  If the answer to this is yes, pay for the rental with a credit card and you should be fine.  Do not buy the car renter insurance.  However, if you feel like you don’t carry enough insurance or want peace of mind then rental car insurance is the way to go.
Happy driving and remember the sun screen on the white sands of Destin…

Good stuff! I always wondered if car rental insurance was a good deal for me. From this article I can say no! No more car rental insurance for me.

I had a bad experience

I know it can be expensive, but I was in an accident in a rental car and I am glad that I had rental car insurance. Most of the people I spoke with at Avis were pretty nice and they helped me take care of things. I know rental car insurance is REALLY expensive, but in my case it paid off.

I am a sucker...

I thought I got a great deal on a rental car... something like $21/day on a recent trip to California. However, when checking in I was not really paying attention and when the agent asked me if I wanted the rental car insurance I said "yeah yeah whatever." When I returned the car 4 days later I was SHOCKED to find out that the rental car insurance cost MORE than my car rental. After it was all said and done it cost me like $50/day for a $21/day rental. BE CAREFUL WITH RENTAL CAR INSURANCE. Be sure you know what you are getting.

Outside the US???

Hi Mr. Thrifty,
I'm wondering who's included when you say/write "everyone"... only US citizens?
At least over here in Germany, none of the normal credit cards will cover anything when renting a car. For AMEX Platinum does it, but who is using this kind of card? Everyone?
The same applies to car insurances over here, they are attached to the car your buying the insurance for.
What a pity, I got so exited reading your article, thinking I could save easily $150 on my next vacation... But that seems very risky to me.
Insurance a Scam

FYI- If you do buy the car rental insurance, note that in many cases the rental car insurance only kicks in AFTER your personal car insurance pays up. I thought that when I purchased the car rental insurance through the rental place I was covered. I was not. As a result of my fender bender MY insurance rates went up. SCAM.

Dear Outside the US-

You are correct in that Mr. Thrifty is incorrect when he writes "everyone". Rental car insurance is standard with many credit cards here in the U.S. and Mr. Thrifty assumed that was the case in other countries as well. My appologies.
