Saving on Gymboree Clothing
Mr. Thrifty may be wise in the ways of penny pinching, but he has no idea the kind of strain that kids put on your wallet.  So as someone with experience in this area, I’m here to give you some thoughts on saving money on kids clothing…particularly on Gymboree brand clothing.

Having bought my kiddos’ clothes from a wide variety of places (the Target clearance rack is practically my home away from home!), I will testify that Gymboree clothes, although more expensive, wash better and last longer than most other clothes I’ve bought.  And with a few hints, you’ll be surprised at how reasonably priced Gymboree clothing can be.

Number One – Get Friendly With the Gymboree Ladies!
Get to know your Gymboree store and/or join their mailing list at www.gymboree.com.  That way the employees can give you a heads up about when things will be marked down or when their next “percent off” sale will be, and you’ll receive e-mails about all of their sales, and even special coupons just for mailing list members.

Number Two - Never buy anything full price at Gymboree!
There is always a sale right around the corner.   However, if for some reason you “must have” a certain item, keep your receipt!  They offer price adjustments for a full week after your purchase – all you have to do is bring in your receipt!  As for the sales, there seems to always be something going on.  Their seasonal “Red Hot Dot” sales can save you up to 60 percent on sale items and are great for stocking up on basics and buying in “future sizes” for your kiddos.  I love their “stair step” type sales – the more you buy the more you save.  Generally (although this can vary), you save 30 percent on purchases of $100 or more, 25 percent on purchases of $75 or more and 20 percent off purchases of $50 or more.  I personally love getting $100 worth of clothes for $70, and these sales are especially great when used in conjunction with a Gymboree favorite – the Gymbuck!  (See Number Three for details on these fun little bonuses!)  There are also “Friends and Family” sales several times throughout the year that you’ll receive notice of via the e-mail list, which saves you 30 percent on your entire purchase, and other special sales such as “Rise and Shine” sales that allow you to come in and shop before the store even opens with a savings of 25 to 30 percent, usually.  You get invites to those types of sales by following rule number one – get to know your Gymboree store!  By befriending the employees, you’ll get those extra savings.

Number Three – Make Gymbucks work for you!
Gymbucks are “bonus” coupons that are offered many times throughout the year…for every $50 you spend, you get a $25 Gymbuck which you can use on a future purchase of $50 or more.  Gymbucks can usually be “earned” during a two week to one month period and believe me, there is ALWAYS at least one good sale during that time period as well.  So first shop the sales to earn the Gymbucks and then during the redemption period (again, usually two weeks to a month) wait for another sale, redeem those Gymbucks and save at least 50 percent on the clothes.  But again, even when shopping with Gymbucks, don’t forget rule number two – never, ever pay full price.  The clothes you love will be marked down before you know it.

Number Four – Save Even More with the Gymboree Visa
When you make purchases using the Gymboree Visa (which they can give you more info about in Gymboree stores) you save an additional 5 percent on every purchase!  The extra savings is great, but even better is that you get a 1 percent rebate (in the form of a Gymboree gift card) on non-Gymboree purchases you make with the card.  My husband uses his card for all of his reimbursable work expenses, so the card gets paid off every month and we get a fun little Gymboree bonus once a year!  Woo Hoo!  That’s free clothes!

Number Five – Done With It?  Ebay It!

Gymboree clothing comes out in various “lines” that change throughout the year and are only available for that limited time.  Parents (I’m speaking from personal experience here!) fall in love with certain lines and are always looking to buy additional items or “the next size up” in their favorites.  I, for example, have scoured Ebay and paid top dollar to find the same Christmas dress my little one wore as a baby in every size she’s been since…and I’m sure I’ll do the same next Christmas.  And I’ve been shocked as I’ve sold used Gymboree clothing on Ebay for more than I originally paid!

A few tips to help you get started –

·                    Always list “Gymboree” and the line name of the clothing in your title.  If you don’t know the line name, browse Ebay (someone is bound to have a similar item listed) or check out www.gymbohaven.com (which has incredibly extensive Gymboree information).

·                    Check the condition of your clothing very carefully.  Be sure to list (or even take photos of) even the smallest imperfection.  Many buyers aren’t bothered by small stains, but it’s important to disclose them ahead of time.

·                    Include good photos of the clothing.  You might even consider posting a picture of your little one in the clothing – many sellers do, and it’s always fun to see the clothing “modeled”!

·                    List all of your items at once, and include “Check out my other listings” (or something to that effect) in your item description.  This can create a buying frenzy that drives your bids up.  I have literally mailed multiple boxes of clothing to the same buyer, which saves the time and hassle of collecting from and shipping to multiple buyers.

·                    Don’t sell at the end of the season.  Generally, people begin to look at spring clothing in January, summer clothing in March, fall clothing in July and winter clothing in September, so those are the prime times to sell.

The greatest part is you can take your Ebay profits and put them right back into more adorable clothes for your kiddos.  Now that’s thrifty!
